Stephan Vanfleteren has been photographing decrepit façades and forgotten vitrines throughout Belgium for the past decade. This has become a melancholy portrait of vanishing small shops, closed village pubs, abandoned brothels and boarded-up façades.

On 15 February 2013, Stephan Vanfleteren won first prize in the ‘Staged Portraits’ category at the World Press Photo Awards. With his ‘People of Mercy’ series, he has tried to put a recognisable face on the sick or disabled Guineans who are looking for help on the moored hospital ship, African Mercy.
The National Portrait award goes to the photographer that has made the most significant portrait of a Dutch person during the past year. With this award, the Silver Camera organisation intends to provide Dutch portrait photography with an extra incentive.
