On 15 February 2013, Stephan Vanfleteren won first prize in the ‘Staged Portraits’ category at the World Press Photo Awards. With his ‘People of Mercy’ series, he has tried to put a recognisable face on the sick or disabled Guineans who are looking for help on the moored hospital ship, African Mercy.
Mercy Ships is an NGO that is dedicated to those in need in Africa and it provides them with free medical assistance. Stephan Vanfleteren went aboard the ship in Guinea and witnessed the fantastic work that the volunteer doctors and staff are doing on the ship.
