The ‘Africa Mercy’ ship is a real hospital at sea, featuring six operating theatres, various hospital rooms and cabins for more than four hundred volunteers. It provides the residents of various Western African countries with the opportunity to have their tumours, eye infections or skin disorders taken care of, free of charge. The ship was moored in Conakry, Guinea in 2012, where Stephan Vanfleteren photographed patients on the quay and in the screening centres.
