NEW BOOK: ATELIER - Stephan Vanfleteren • Published by HANNIBAL BOOKS

For the past twelve years, Stephan Vanfleteren (b. 1969) has been working intense hours in his daylight studio at home. Atelier is a collection of that work. Vanfleteren is searching for beauty and meaning, both in daylight and under artificial light. Grey stage curtains are everywhere as a constantly repeating background. The photographer embraces wellknown personalities and anonymous people. He inspects and captures the grooves in the face of an old fisherman and the hand of Nick Cave on the same terms as he does a beachcombed bottle. He focuses an adoring gaze on his own children coming of age as well as on impassioned artists in their old age. He sees the frozen corpse of a kingfisher and the body of a twisting dancer, and watches as the sunlight slowly shifts across his stage curtain. Vanfleteren connects to the traditions of old and contemporary masters but remains faithful to his characteristic style. Vanaf 2 juni 2022: Expo FLASH I BACK, Mauritshuis in Den Haag (NL)

Het Mauritshuis in Den Haag bestaat 200 jaar. Met een indrukwekkende fotografietentoonstelling willen ze laten zien dat de 17de-eeuwse collectie een blijvende inspiratiebron is. Ze vroegen aan zestien moderne meesters om zich te laten inspireren door het museum en zijn collectie, met als resultaat zestien nieuwe foto’s, één voor elke museumzaal.

De zestien fotografen zijn niet alleen gevestigde namen maar ook aanstormende talenten. De selectie werd gemaakt door Martine Gosselink (Directeur Mauritshuis), Hedwig Wösten (Manager Tentoonstellingen & Projecten Mauritshuis) en Frits Gierstberg (Conservator Nederlands Fotomuseum). Diverse aspecten speelden daarbij een rol. Alle fotografen moesten wel van Nederlandse of Vlaamse bodem zijn, net als de collectie van het Mauritshuis, die bestaat uit Vlaamse en Nederlandse oude meesters.

De deelnemende fotografen zijn Rineke Dijkstra, Anton Corbijn, Viviane Sassen, Erwin Olaf, Sara Blokland, Morad Bouchakour, Elspeth Diederix, Desirée Dolron, Kadir van Lohuizen, Sanja Marušić, Vincent Mentzel, Kevin Osepa, Ahmet Polat, Carla van de Puttelaar, Dustin Thierry en, als enige Belg, Stephan Vanfleteren.

Hannibal Books maakte voor deze speciale gelegenheid het boek FLASH I BACK.

Stephan Vanfleteren reisde mee met Philippe Herreweghe - Collegium Vocale Gent en bracht het ensemble en zijn dirigent op meesterlijke wijze in beeld. In zijn visuele interpretatie is een centrale rol weggelegd voor religiositeit.

In 1970 richtte Philippe Herreweghe Collegium Vocale Gent op, waarmee hij zich onder meer toelegde op composities van Johann Sebastian Bach en Duitse barokmuziek. Het ensemble paste nieuwe inzichten over de uitvoering van barokmuziek toe op de vocale muziek en verwierf in nauwelijks enkele jaren tijd wereldfaam. Dit jaar viert Philippe Herreweghe zijn vijfenzeventigste verjaardag met een prachtig boek waarin hij terugblikt op zijn leven en vruchtbare carrière als dirigent.

Fotograaf Stephan Vanfleteren reisde mee naar het Toscaanse zomerfestival Collegium Vocale Crete Senesi en bracht het ensemble en zijn dirigent op meesterlijke wijze in beeld. In zijn visuele interpretatie is een centrale rol weggelegd voor religiositeit.

Met tekstbijdragen van Joep Stapel en Luc De Voogdt over leven en werk van Philippe Herreweghe en de componisten die hem het meest inspireerden, en met een persoonlijke tekst van Philippe Herreweghe over Bach en de dood.

De VUB kent eredoctoraten toe aan Stephan Vanfleteren en Dirk Braeckman. Ze krijgen de titel van Doctor Honoris Causa voor hun algemene maatschappelijke verdiensten.

De Vrije Universiteit Brussel kent eredoctoraten toe aan de fotografen Stephan Vanfleteren en Dirk Braeckman. Ze krijgen de titel van Doctor Honoris Causa voor hun algemene maatschappelijke verdiensten. Dirk Braeckman zoekt de grenzen op in de fotografie. Hij geeft de vrijheid aan de kijker om te interpreteren: een schitterende uitbeelding van de VUB-waarde dat de gedachten vrij zijn. Ook het vermogen van Stephan Vanfleteren om ons met licht en donker, wit en zwart, tot nadenken te stemmen en te beroeren, heeft voor de Vrije Universiteit Brussel met als kernspreuk ‘Scientia Vincere Tenebras’, een heel bijzondere betekenis.

De uitreiking vindt plaats op dinsdag 3 augustus om 11 uur in Casino Kursaal in Oostende tijdens Theater Aan Zee. Journalisten die aanwezig willen zijn of een interview willen afnemen met de gelauwerden of rector Caroline Pauwels, kunnen dit melden bij de persrelaties van de VUB. In de bijlage vindt u de motivatie om Stephan Vanfleteren en Dirk Braeckman een eredoctoraat uit te reiken.

Vandaag 21 juni is de dag van de zonnewende. Het spel van licht en donker is een vast element in de werken van fotograaf Stephan Vanfleteren en van fotograaf, beeldenmaker en picturaal kunstenaar Dirk Braeckman.

VUB-rector Caroline Pauwels, die ook gast-curator voor Theater Aan Zee is. “Met deze eredoctoraten en met het partnerschap met Theater aan Zee tonen we ons als een verbonden organisatie en leggen we bewust de brug tussen wetenschap en kunst. Academici en kunstenaars werken immers beiden vanuit nieuwsgierigheid, verwondering, vrijheid, creativiteit en kritisch denken. Dat bewijst het werk van fotografen zoals Stephan Vanfleteren en Dirk Braeckman.”

Gastvrouw Fien Sabbe verwelkomt na de officiële toekenning van de eredoctoraten schrijver Peter Verhelst en muzikanten Mauro Pawlowski en Brihang om de laureaten extra in de bloemetjes te zetten.

De uitreiking van de eredoctoraten is ook toegankelijk voor het publiek, mits reservering van een ticket (5 euro). Te verkrijgen op de website van TAZ. Na de uitreiking kan je (tot en met 8 augustus) een tentoonstelling van het werk van Dirk Braeckman bezoeken in de galerij Hertstraat 9. Werk van Stephan Vanfleteren is te zien op de ijslandvisserij tentoonstelling in de Venetiaanse gaanderijen.

Op 13 maart, precies het moment dat de wereld stilviel, begon Stephan Vanfleteren te wandelen. Hij wandelde bij valavond, vaak was hij uren onderweg. Hij zag het lente worden. ‘Alles zoals altijd. En toch kijk je nu beter. Je ziet dat de winterstormen het strand hebben veranderd. Dat vloed anders terugstroomt naar de zee. Je fantaseert uitvergrote virussen in de kruinen van de geknakte bomen.’ Gaandeweg raakt hij op de 15 kilometer rond zijn huis uitgekeken en breidt hij zijn actieradius uit. Onderweg fotografeert hij, maar hij houdt ook een dagboek bij. Hij noteert wat hij ziet, voelt en overdenkt. Na tweeënhalve maand is er het besef dat de stilte weg is. Stephan Vanfleteren eindigt zijn dagboek een paar weken later, als de zomer aanbreekt. Dagboek van een fotograaf legt op een fijnzinnige, persoonlijke en nabije manier de meest ingrijpende maanden uit onze hedendaagse geschiedenis vast. Stephan Vanfleteren is een gelauwerd fotograaf. Zijn werk is veelvuldig bekroond, onder meer door World Press Photo. In 2012 ontving hij de Nationale Portretprijs voor een foto van Rem Koolhaas. Naast tal van exposities verschenen ook diverse publicaties van zijn hand; Belgicum geldt als een van de belangrijkste boeken in de Belgische geschiedenis van de fotografie. Present, de expo die in oktober 2019 in het Fotomuseum Antwerpen opende, is de eerste grote overzichtstentoonstelling van Stephan Vanfleteren. Deze tentoonstelling, met bijbehorende imposante catalogus, was een ongekend succes en wordt nu voor de tweede keer verlengd.

At the beginning of the lockdown in Belgium Stephan Vanfleteren introduces a new ritual: Corona Walks. At nightfall he goes to the sea, the dunes, the forest or the polders. Not in a hurry, because ordinary life stands still. The journey always ends in darkness. .

A selection from the new series that Stephan Vanfleteren made during his walks will be on show at FOMU from June 27, 2020. These pictures are the photographer's answer to the pandemic that broke out during the Present retrospective. Corona Walks occupies an extra room in the museum and is an addition to the Stephan Vanfleteren - Present exhibition. Both can be visited until September 13, 2020. (Text: FOMU Antwerp)

CORONA WALKS: Newest serial - April 2020

The days are getting longer.
Day length has finally overpowered night duration. For more than a month now, I have been seeing the defeat of light every single night. Sometimes the day falls like a marble behind the horizon, other times it is floored on a soft sheet of water vapor.
Is it day or night yet? Twilight as a ring girl from a Sisyphus fight. When my soles slow down for a moment, my hunting instinct is sharp and my finger presses the shutter button. ‘Entre chien et loup’ , (between dog and wolf) describes this phenomenon so beautifully. Depending on the twilight time, either more a wolf is shot or more a dag. Judgment depends on the dark mind or optimistic spirit. You may mourn the arrival of the irrevocable night or you may be thankful for the last light. Half empty, half full. No idea, but the glass is cracked.

I have seen a lot in this dusk. Forests left their brown winter fur and became greener by the day. Headlamps of hasty tractors shone across dry ground, sodium lamps reflected on sewer covers, police combos wandered the night streets of coastal towns, concrete from the previous war absorbed the evening light, condensation streaks from cargo flights evaporated in the sky, sea spark fluoresced in the billow and the moon swelled from a fingernail to a super moon.

Once I cheated and went for a walk during noon. It was a moment when the light was at its highest and the forces of attraction of the moon and the sun were working against each other: neap tide.
Sandbanks that rarely rise above sea level can now be seen. I step to where my thigh boots allow. I have never walked deeper into the sea. The swell is wringing, the sea is confused. Death current. The moment of the change from ebb to flow. Waves collide. The sea becomes a three-dimensional landscape of curves and statistics. They go up to a peak and immediately descend to the valley.
Our corona curve is slower and the top is a plateau.
We long for spring tide.
It's time to jump.
The days are too long.

It is not doing so well with the world, or more correctly, it is not doing so well with humanity and its system. While cities ghosting and economies bursting, nature does not behave much differently than usual.

Spring is budding. Last week I saw the first bumblebee, the day before yesterday a butterfly and today a purple dead nettle in the dunes. Clouds float on, birds chirp at each other, waves break and in the West the light disappears. Everything as always. And yet you look better now. You can see that winter storms have changed the beach. That ebb flows back to the sea otherwise. You fantasize magnified viruses in the tops of the broken trees. You gaze at the holiday-apartment buildings at the beach and you don't think of tourists but of prisoners. An invisible virus makes you look differently. Temporary happiness in a great drama. I go for a walk during the evening news. To the sea, dunes or forest, always at nightfall. Walks that are slower, longer and darker than before. No rush, no impatient messages are waiting in your mailbox. Longer on the road, normal life still stands still. The journey always ends in darkness, because the light does not wait for anyone. Walking becomes strolling. Hang on, return on my steps, wait, watch, observe. And shooting from the wrist, which does not wear a watch. Some clap their hands to support the healthcare sector, sing or make music from a balcony. Others send poems by mail or hang a white blanket on the window. All equally meaningless, and yet so very useful. The fellow man comforts and supports.

Walking in the evening country. The evening does not fall alone. We will get up together later.

Present, the first major retrospective exhibition of the renowned Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren (° 1969) at FOMU is an overwhelming success. More than 100,000 people visited the exhibition. Time to let the photographer speak. In this artist talk, Stephan Vanfleteren talks about his life as a photographer based on his photo albums. Together with Stephan you look back on a rich and intense oeuvre with one constant: the photographer is always present, always present.

With your ticket for the Artist Talk you can also visit the expo in FOMU free of charge between 10 am and 6 pm on 13 March. You can purchase his books before or after the artist talk (payment via Bancontact).
